Norway’s Magnus Krog surged to victory in the Nordic Combined race at Val di Fiemme, clawing back a deficit of just over a minute from the jumping leg.
The 28-year-old was sat fifth after flying 113.5 metres, with Eric Frenzel occupying the top spot and starting the 10km cross country race 1:04 ahead.
But Krog pushed the pace and caught the German six kilometres in, running away from him in the last quarter of the race to seize his third World Cup victory, and second this season after winning in Lillehammer before Christmas.
A tired Frenzel eventually finished 27.9 seconds back in fourth place, with both Joergen Graabak and Fabian Riessle overtaking him in the latter stages.
But the German was still able to celebrate despite missing the podium, as he claimed the overall World Cup title with second-placed Akito Watabe not starting through illness.
