IAAF Diamond League
From May to September, watch the IAAF Diamond League LIVE on Eurosport Player
Throughout May, athletes travel to Doha, Shanghai and Eugene. A world-class field of Olympic and World Champions will kick off their outdoor seasons in Doha. The women’s 200m will be one of the most hotly anticipated races as Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson will take on last year’s Diamond Race winner, 2015 World Champion and Rio Olympic 2016 silver medallist, Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands. The men’s 400m also promises high drama as Grenada’s London 2012 Olympic champion Kirani James goes up against the Beijing 2008 Olympic champion and double World Champion, LaShawn Merritt of the USA. In Shanghai, Justin Gatlin will face competition from Kim Collins in the 100m, and Britain’s 2014 European Champion Adam Gemili will line-up in the 200m.
The Diamond League meetings host the finest athletes in track and field with the events representing added significance as preparation builds towards the World Championships in London in August. This season sees a major restructure adopting a championship style model with the finalists competing for a prize pool of $3.2million. Athletes will earn points in the first 12 events to qualify for the final two meetings where the overall championship winner will be crowned.
