Italian rugby player Davide Vasta has tested positive for 11 banned substances – apparently a record-breaking number.
Vasta, who plays in the country’s third division for Amatori Catania, tested positive for a cocktail of anabolic substances.
“I didn’t know that the substances would have remained in my body for so long,” Vasta explained, insisting that he took the drugs more than a year ago.
“I put my health in serious risk but also my team and my fans.
“It was a big mistake and I feel sorry about it. I’m shocked”
According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, the previous record for the number of banned substances found in a single athlete’s test was seven.
