Norway’s Aleksander Kilde recorded his first World Cup win after topping the podium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
Frenzel crossed the line in 11:08.5 minutes, just over six seconds clear of his nearest challenger Akito Watabe of Japan, while Frenzel’s German teammate
Kilde’s time of 1:55.28 was enough for him to become the first Norwegian to win a World Cup race in Garmisch and made it five downhill wins for the country this season – just the second time that has happened.
The 23-year-old’s previous best was third place in a super giant slalom race in December and there was also an unexpected second-place finish for Slovenian Bostjan Kline.
Kline had never made the top ten before today, with his previous best being 13th in December 2014, but he looked set to win in Garmisch before Kilde finished 0.22 seconds faster.
An error at the start of his 3,300m race meant Switzerland’s Beat Feuz had to settle for third place.
"It's unbelievable for team Norway," Kilde said.
"When I got my number yesterday, I thought it would be difficult to get into the top ten.
"I thought it was pretty even for everyone. They did a good job in this weather and it was holding up pretty well."
