Mikaela Shiffrin had to settle for second best in the final slalom race of the season, but that didn’t stop her from being crowned overall World Cup winner in Aspen.
Slovakia’s Petra Vlhova took the final World Cup crown of the campaign with victory in the USA, stopping the clock in a time of 1:32.00 to take the final 100 points.
Shiffrin finished 0.24 seconds back to take second, with Frida Hansdotter of Sweden occupying the final spot on the podium.
Shiffrin went into the final two races with an almost unassailable 198-point advantage at the top of the leaderboard, a win almost guaranteed after Ilka Stuhec's withdrawal.
"I don't know if I'll ever process that," Shiffrin said of her overall title.
"It's been a goal and a dream of mine since I was five-years-old. It's really difficult to understand something that finally happens after 20 years."
Shiffrin could make it a treble on Sunday when she bids for the title in the season-ending giant slalom, but lies 81 points behind Tessa Worley if she is to add another crown to her collection.
"I'm definitely motivated after today," Shiffrin said. "I don't want to leave anything out there."
