John Higgins suffers defeat, Judd Trump progresses

Judd Trump overcame Tom Ford 4-2 to progress to the last-16 stage of the World Grand Prix at Preston's Guild Hall.

But four-times world champion John Higgins was checking out of Preston early after suffering a surprise 4-3 defeat to 26th seed Michael White.

Higgins opened with a 60, but was forced to sit and watch as White ran in 55 and 57 to lead 2-1.

The Scotsman restored parity at 2-2 with a 67 only for Welshman White to make 57 for a 3-2 lead.

Higgins forced the decider with a 54 after White's 61 was not enough to seal the win, but a fine 96 in the seventh completed the victory.

Ford finds himself eliminated despite compiling breaks of 87, 102 and 62 in a first-to-four shootout with world number world number four Trump.

Trump only broke the half century barrier once but did it in style, with a 145 in frame four to level proceedings at two frames each before claiming the next two.

Elsewhere, Liang Wenbo eased into the next round courtesy of 4-0 win over Dominic Dale.

Wenbo, who beat Trump in the final of the English Open back in October 2016, was rarely stretched by world number 35 Dale, and made a 92 in frame two.
