But tournament favourite Ronnie O'Sullivan maintained his composure against world number 127 Lukas Kleckers to complete a 4-2 win after his young German opponent had rallied with a glorious 137 break on his way to restoring parity at 2-2.
Breaks of 91 and 126 earned O'Sullivan a 2-0 advantage only for the 21-year-old to piece together 137 and 60 at the Waterfront Hall.
But Kleckers could only muster two points in the final two frames as O'Sullivann finished with a 71 to progress after failed to register a point in the third and fourth frames.
O'Sullivan was again unhappy with the role of photographers at the venue with two of them forced to leave the arena because they were not using tripods.
World number two Trump - who lost 10-3 to O'Sullivan in the final of the Shanghai Masters on Saturday - trailed 3-2 and 52-0 when he missed a red to a middle pocket before conceding the frame by throwing his cue at the balls with 83 points left on the table.
Despite making breaks of 59, 64 and 75, Trump was clearly frustrated by his lack of consistency in the match as his long game deserted him. He faces a fine for conceding a frame while he had enough points to win and also for refusing to attend the media conference afterwards.
Trump had to retrieve his cue prior to the tournament from an airport after flying back from China.
Carrington said he was astonished by Trump's conduct after completing victory for the first time since they both faced each other as teenagers in the junior ranks when he "only beat him once in about 50" matches.
"I knew I was going to leave him a shot at the red to the middle," said Carrington, who celebrated a first win over Trump after three professional meetings. "He's lost his head for that split second. I've never seen that at a match before as a professional, and I'm quite surprised to see it from one of the top players.
I think everyone is a bit shocked. It was very strange. I've never lost my temper like that. Inside you are raging, but in front of the camera it is even worse.
"You feel like it, but you would never do it. He's missed a few balls in the match, and it's just got on top of him," added Carrington, who enjoyed knocks of 79, 56 and 52.
"I sense he was frustrated. At 3-1, I was thinking I can't let him back into the match because I knew he was missing a few and it was getting to him. It just all came out in the end."
