Michael van der Mark had looked on course for a comfortable maiden Superbikes win, only to slide out with the win virtually in sight, almost taking Rea down with him.
But the biggest drama was still to come, with Rea crashing over the prone Davies on a tight corner as Sykes nipped inside from third position.
The initial reaction in Rimini was one of shock as Davies was stretchered from the course as Rea trundled through to a third-placed finish before stopping to check on his sporting rival at the side of the track.
