Willis earned his dream showdown on Centre Court after winning six qualifying matches and his first-round tie, but the 17-time major champion Federer proved a step too far.
Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at five of Willis' best moments in the match.
1. His entrance
Willis had probably dreamed of this moment all his life and as he walked out on Centre Court ahead of Federer, the crowd cheered and immediately rose to their feet. The pair exchanged a joke at the net before posing for the photographers, a picture Willis may be keen to get hold of.
2. His fans
A loyal band of supporters chanted 'Willis' through his opening-round victory and they were out in force again, sitting in the front rows and close to the action. As they sang their hero's name during the warm-up, Willis looked over and applauded his racket in appreciation.
3. His first point won
Federer claimed the first two points of the contest but Willis won the third when the seven-time Wimbledon champion's forehand hit the net. The crowd exploded into hysterics, cheering and applauding like the Briton had won the match. The score was 30-15.
4. His final point lost
After the last point Willis and Federer embraced at the net. Willis then sat in his chair, pausing for breath, before he walked back to the court and accepted a rousing reception. The 25-year-old looked emotional as he returned to his chair, while his girlfriend Jenny blew a kiss from the crowd.
5. His departure
Federer waited for his opponent and they left together, both signing autographs for expectant fans in the corner. As Willis stopped for pictures, his mum Cathy and dad James hugged. They will hope this is not their last visit to Centre Court.
