The world number one bounced back from the disappointment of his doubles defeat the day before to dispatch his lowly-ranked opponent 6-4 6-1.
Murray joins fellow Brit Dan Evans in the second round after the British No. 2 beat Dustin Brown to tee up a meeting with the enigmatic Gael Monfils.
But there was a shock loss for Stan Wawrinka, with the Swiss star making a disappointing return from a knee injury with a straight sets loss to world No. 77 Damir Dzumhur.
The Bosnian produced a big shock in 2016 when he knocked Tomas Berdych out of the Monte Carlo Masters, but the 24-year-old said this victory is his best yet.
I think this win is bigger, because this win was on a hard court against a player who likes this surface, who won the tournament last year. Against Berdych, it was clay, the one that I like more. You definitely have more chances on clay against Tomas than on hard against Stan. After winning the first game, I started to fight, to grind, and I found some way to play, to stay in the game. Playing longer points was giving me more chances. It’s not easy to finish a game with those players. They know how to play when they are down, when they want to come back. But, yeah, I found a way in the end.
