The British No 1 was dominant on the big points against America's Sam Querrey and showed some incredible defence to reach the fourth round with a 6-4 6-2 6-4 win.
He lost his serve for the first time in the third set and, despite his ankle appearing to trouble him early on after he twisted it in his previous match, the 29-year-old said it felt better as the match went on.
No doubt buoyed by the exit of his main rival, Novak Djokovic, on Thursday, Murray was in inspired form with Querrey also playing his best and perhaps unlucky not to take the first set.
Murray is now clear favourite to win the tournament, and faces Germany's Mischa Zverev in the last 16.
Meanwhile, Angelique Kerber raced out of the blocks against Kristýna Plíšková, winning the first set in under 30 minutes.

But the Czech recovered from being bageled to move into a 3-2 lead, only to fall 6-4 on a strangely subdued Rod Laver Arena.
Kerber, who, unlike Murray, still has her biggest rival - Serena Williams - in the draw will now face Coco Vandeweghe in the fourth round.
