Dan Evans and Naomi Broady were both left disappointed after losing at the Citi Open in Washington.
Britain's No 4 male lost out in the third round to Jack Sock 6-1 7-5 after struggling against the big-serving American, who won 23 of 25 first-serve points.
Evans, who had enjoyed impressive wins over Benjamin Becker and Grigor Dimitrov, quickly slipped 5-0 behind in the opening set against the world number 26 and although he avoided being blanked he was also made to work to stay in the second set.
He saved two early break points and then failed to take advantage of a set point on Sock's serve at 5-4. The 26-year-old then failed to convert a game point in the next game as he was broken by Sock, who then served out for victory in just under 76 minutes.
Broady, meanwhile, lost a third-set decider to Risa Ozaki in the second round.
Japan's world number 136 converted two of the three break points she had on her way to wrapping up the first set 6-1.
And Broady then secured the only break of the second set as Ozaki served to stay in the set with the Brit taking it 7-5.
It came down to taking your opportunities in the decider as Broady could only convert one of the three break chances she had but Ozaki cashed in both of hers to wrap up a 6-1 5-7 6-4 win.
