Alex Bogdanovic had earlier lost in straight sets to Noam Okun, and things looked bleak for the home country when Murray fell behind to his 662-ranked opponent.
But something finally clicked for the 19-year-old Scot as he turned things around in the third set and finished with a flourish to record a 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 6-3 triumph.
After the match, Murray took a swipe at photographers, who he felt were disrupting to his play on court.
"It was mentally quite difficult to come back from two sets down when you are expected to comfortably beat a player who is predominately a doubles player," Murray said.
"But I did that very well and think I have answered a few questions from people who said I gave up in the same position against Baghdatis at Wimbledon.
"As a professional sportsperson there is nothing worse than, as you are lining up to hit a ball and it is completely silent in a tennis match, you hear, like, 15 clicks going off.
"It is pretty off-putting. You can understand it during a rally or when you have finished your service action but when you are throwing a ball up to serve and there is that much noise it can be very annoying."
Murray lines up in a new-look partnership with Jamie Delgado to face Ram and Jonathan Erlich in the doubles on Saturday.
Britain must win to avoid a relegation play-off against Ukraine after defeat to Serbia and Montenegro in April.
