In 2016, then San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick put one knee to the ground during pre-game renditions of the "Star Spangled Banner".
Kaepernick explained his decision to the NFL website in the wake of his protest.
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder," said Kaepernick.
The #TakeAKnee movement has gained increasing traction in recent weeks. So much so that US President Donald Trump decided to enter the debate with some inflammatory comments this weekend.
“If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU'RE FIRED. Find something else to do,” Trump tweeted on Sunday.
That has led to a strong response from those within the game.
And at the Laver Cup on Sunday it appears as though Nick Kyrgios kneeled in solidarity ahead of his match with Roger Federer.
One Twitter user pointed to the fact that Kyrgios and Kaepernick share an agent.
However, it may not have been necessarily a political statement from the Australian.
Either way, Kaepernick’s stance continues to focus attention on issues of civil liberties across the world.
