Highlights: Novak Djokovic wins maiden French Open title

-

Andy Murray was magnanimous in defeat but admitted that it sucked to lose the French Open final to Novak Djokovic.

18:00

That's the end of a very peculiar fortnight. There's been rain, big-name withdrawals, rain, upsets, rain, a first-time women's champion and a history-making men's champion. Let the grass-court season begin. Thanks for your company throughout the tournament!

17:45

That's it, then. Djokovic has the full set of slams - is he going to carry that on and turn it into a calendar slam, do you think?

-
-

Time for a quick photo shoot in the Paris evening sunshine.

-

Djokovic turns to his team and his family, and thanks them for their support and understanding and "being able to manage me".

-

Djokovic congratulates Murray for his performance and thanks him for his words. "It was a pleasure to play against you once more and to share special moments on the court...I'm sure we'll be seeing you with the big trophies in the future."

17:35

"Hi, sorry, I don't speak French, so I'm going to go in English today," says Murray. He thanks his team and the crowd for creating "a fantastic atmosphere", which is perhaps more diplomatic than accurate; and thanks the umpires, judges and ball kids. He congratulates Djokovic and his team: "This is his day today. What he's achieved in the last 12 months is phenomenal. Winning all four of the grand slams in one year is an amazing achievement. This is something that is so rare in tennis. It's not happened for an extremely long time...everyone here who came to watch is extremely lucky to see it. Me, personally, being on the opposite side, it sucks to lose the match, but I'm proud of have been part of today."

-

Djokovic sings along to the Serbia national anthem, with his eyes closed.

-
-
-

Novak Djokovic grits his teeth and lifts the trophy, then hugs it close to him.

-

Andy Murray picks up his runner-up tray and gets a decent round of applause. He's smiling. He can be extremely proud of his work this fortnight.

-

It's been awful weather for a fortnight, and the sun is now shining on court.

17:25

Miles Maclagan in the Eurosport studio says Andy Murray should be very proud of his efforts this afternoon. Greg Rusedski adds that it's "hard to bet against Djokovic".

-

The Djokovic parents come on to the court to congratulate their boy.

-

Djokovic gathers the ball kids around him to wave at the crowd once more, and then has a sit-down for a moment of reflection.

-

Murray takes his seat and stares into space. Djokovic lies on the ground and blows kisses to the crowd.

-
-

The combatants hug at the net.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4 Murray: Djokovic smirks again and flaps his arms, urging the crowd to get back behind him. Then he records a double-fault on his first championship point - and hits wide to lose his second. Deuce. Murray's standing way behind the base line and breathing heavily as Djokovic takes the advantage once more - and after a lengthy rally, Murray nets and that's the French Open title for Novak Djokovic.

-

Andy Murray looked like he was in the ascendancy when Novak Djokovic produced a scintillating crosscourt winner.

-

Djokovic is first off his chair and back to his end. Murray takes his time, reviewing his racket.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 5-4 Murray: There's a roar and a fist-pump from Murray as he holds - his entire camp are on their feet, and though there's still a "Nole!" chant in the stands, there's also cheering for Murray's sheer guts.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 5-3 Murray: And this is a rejuvenated Andy Murray! What a response - he breaks and is back in this fourth set...all he needs to do is hold. Right?

-
-
-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 5-2 Murray: And there's a break to love for Djokovic. Murray was absolutely hollering as he sent those serves down but to no avail. Djokovic smirks as he towels off and prepares to serve for the match.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 4-2 Murray: A swift hold to love for Djokovic. Murray is telegraphing his shot selection now.

-
-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 3-2 Murray: A double fault from Murray - his third of the match - and Djokovic crushes to take the advantage. Murray removes his cap and tugs at his hair in frustration - and then pushes right back at Djokovic to hold serve. Time is running out for him to get that necessary break back, though.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 3-1 Murray: A love hold for Djokovic, and Murray is not getting anything on his returns now. This looks like we're heading to a very swift and now inevitable conclusion unless Andy Murray can suddenly recapture that first-set form.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 2-1 Murray: In an odd twist of events, the crowd are now cheering Murray on, getting their support behind the underdog. There does seem to be a ripple of booing, mind, underneath the applause.

-

Andy Murray produces tremendous crosscourt winner

-
-
-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 2-0 Murray: Murray has been talking to himself between points and it doesn't seem to be helping him. He can't keep up with what Djokovic is doing.

-

Murray is asking the umpire to move something. Can't quite hear what - perhaps the overhead camera, according to the Eurosport commentary team.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 1-0 Murray: Murray is raging at the crowd now as he tries to keep his concentration when serving. Djokovic is still running about as if they haven't been playing for two and a quarter hours. Break.

-

Andy Murray falls apart at the net as he tries to fend off a break point in the second set.

-

Annabel Croft: "It feels more like a football match crowd...it's very overwhelmingly in favour of Novak Djokovic...they are very much with him and willing him on."

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 6-2 Murray: The third set ends in anti-climactic fashion - Murray hits it long and even as the umpire comes down to inspect the mark on the court, Djokovic is already marching back to his seat.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 5-2 Murray: Andy Murray is stepping up the aggression, as he needs to, and holds well - but Djokovic just needs to serve it out.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 5-1 Murray: Murray is angry with himself as he's looking to dig deeper, but he cannot get on any of the FOUR break points he carves out.

-

Andy Murray probably thought he had won that point…

-
-
-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 4-1 Murray: That's the double-break from Djokovic with an exquisitely-placed cross-court shot that defies all sense to land in but past the reach of Murray.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 3-1 Murray: Andy Murray hangs his head at the end of this game - he looks thoroughly exhausted already. There was a lot of chatter before the match about him playing five more hours so far during this tournament than Djokovic - but he looked much the brighter in the opening set.

-

Utter brilliance from both Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic during the first set of their French Open final.

-
-
-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 2-1 Murray: That's a break for Novak Djokovic, who's in control of all these rallies, and Murray falls apart at the net on the final point.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 1-1 Murray: That forehand from Djokovic is absolutely belting now. Murray is urging himself on but he can't break.

-

Novak Djokovic argues with umpire after contentious call at the end of the first set.

-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 0-1 Murray: "COME ON!" is the cry from Murray, who's gritted his teeth and come out fighting. A much better service game - he needs to get back to the heights of that first set.

-
-

Djokovic 3-6 6-1 Murray: Just over half an hour for that second set, in which Djokovic has absolutely raised the bar. Wondrous tennis from him and Murray now needs to come up with a plan to counter if he's going to stay in this.

-
-

Andy Murray got the balance between defence and attack spot on during the first set against Novak Djokovic.

-

Djokovic 3-6 5-1 Murray: Really good drop shot from Djokovic in response to Murray's own. Break of serve and surely that's the second set for the world number one.

-
-
-
-

Djokovic 3-6 4-1 Murray: Djokovic continues his march in the second set, and enjoys the support of the cord as well as the crowd.

-

Djokovic 3-6 3-1 Murray: Murray on the board in the second set, saving two break points very bravely.

-
-

Djokovic 3-6 3-0 Murray: Djokovic much the happier at the second set sit-down - three consecutive games and a break up. Frew McMillan suggests on Eurosport that Murray needs to think more carefully about his serve choice next.

-

Murray could do with responding to this setback in the same way as he did in the first set - with four straight games and some brilliant tennis...

-
-

Djokovic 3-6 2-0 Murray: Some nerves creeping in now, and the murmurs around Chatrier are not helping him. A double-fault gifts the break to Djokovic.

-

Djokovic 3-6 1-0 Murray: That's a hard-fought hold from Djokovic, and he even double-faults in there. Even the partisan Chatrier crowd are forced to applaud some of Murray's points, mind.

-
-

Djokovic 3-6 Murray: Whistles abound as Djokovic argues with the umpire, who's awarded Murray a point - the call of out on the Brit's serve came just as his opponent made contact with the ball, but the point wasn't replayed. Murray double-faults on his first set point, Djokovic seethes with power on the second - BUT WITH THE THIRD, MURRAY SEALS IT. Djokovic nets the return and that's FIRST SET TO ANDY MURRAY.

-
-

Djokovic 3-5 Murray: An ace from Djokovic to hold - and to pose the question to Andy Murray, "Can you serve this first set out?" Murray has calmed down after the previous game.

-
-

Djokovic 2-5 Murray: Andy Murray's serve at the moment is a thing of absolute wonder. He is not happy with the "out" call that takes it to the first deuce, but the Chatrier crowd are, and they escalate their "Nole!" chants. Incidentally, Murray is LIVID with a journalist in the players' box who's trying to get an interview with the team while he's trying to serve.

-

Djokovic 2-4 Murray: As a very loud helicopter flies overhead, Djokovic manages to hold his serve.

-
-

Djokovic 1-4 Murray: While his big brother tweets about his fridge-freezer being broken, Murray himself looks as cool as ice. That's four games in a row since that wobbly opener, and the Murray serve is looking excellent - an ace here wraps it up.

-

Djokovic 1-3 Murray: A FIZZING forehand down the line from Murray is just one of the terrific shots he wheels out in this game. Djokovic is still using the cheeky dink over the net to test him.

-
-

Djokovic 1-2 Murray: Marvellous service game, Murray holds to love and clenches his fist. He knows the crowd are against him - as they were in the semi-final - and he does not care.

-
-

Djokovic 1-1 Murray: What a BRILLIANT lob from Andy Murray! He breaks straight back and this is looking like fun. If you like massive tension.

-
-
-
-

Djokovic 1-0 Murray: A blistering start to the final from Novak Djokovic, physical, sharp, and forcing Murray all over the place.

-
-
14:10

Finally, the stands are packed, the skies are cloudy, and we're about to start.

-
-
-

Murray, holding the hand of one of the ball kids, heads out first, followed by Djokovic.

-

"I feel good, I'm looking forward to it," says Murray, who has a wry smile lurking underneath that deadpan exterior.

14:00

Djokovic is smiling before he heads on to court, finding time for a quick interview with French TV.

-
13:45

"It's been a great tournament - I think I managed to elevate my performance as the tournament progressed," says Djokovic.

-

Smith adds that he'll tell Murray to go out and do his best - and trust his instincts.

-

Annabel Croft on Eurosport now reports humid weather conditions. She's talking to Leon Smith who says that Andy Murray is "very businesslike" this morning.
