The defending champion landed some brutal groundstrokes in the one-sided encounter as he fired a warning to the rest of the men’s draw.
The Swiss third seed could not close out the match at the first attempt, with Chardy going for broke and breaking back for 5-5 in the third set, but he immediately earned a second opportunity and did not squander it.

Wawrinka will play Viktor Troicki in the fourth round after the Serb beat Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4 6-2 6-2.
It was a fine showing from the 31-year-old, who is chasing a third Grand Slam following his success at the 2014 Australian Open and Roland Garros last year. His path to the final features potential clashes with Milos Raonic (quarter-finals) and Andy Murray (semi-finals).
