In Tuesday's French Open news, Andy Murray backs up Amelie Mauresmo's comments about his on-court behaviour and Stan Wawrinka remains under the radar despite his five-set Lukas Rosol scare. Meanwhile, Radek Stepanek tests the patience of the Paris crowd with his time-wasting tactics and Heather Watson steps closer to a spot at the Rio Olympics with her first round win.

TUESDAY MORNING’S BIG STORIES

1- Murray "embarrassed" by his own behaviour

Andy Murray's first round struggles against Radek Stepanek have captured most of the headlines after the pair's seesawing encounter on Monday. However, Murray's relationship with former coach Amelie Mauresmo also continues to catch the eye.

Comments by the former French No. 1 in an interview with l'Equipe suggested that there was more to the pair's coaching split than just the demands of parenthood in both of their lives. Mauresmo spoke candidly about Murray's temper and his tendency to take that out on his support camp during matches. And Murray has responded in detail, explaining that he can sometimes be embarrassed by his own on-court behaviour, but that he has found trying to suppress that in the past has had a negative impact on his performances.
“Sometimes I am embarrassed,” Murray said. "When I say what I say, just because I am speaking in the direction of my box, it doesn’t mean it’s against my coach or my team. It’s very often self-criticism. I am abusing myself. But I’m not resigning myself to this being unchangeable. I’ve been working on it for years, I am trying to be better.”

2- Wawrinka continues to fly under the radar

Stan Wawrinka's opening match against Lukas Rosol always had a hint of an upset about it, and so it very nearly proved. But the defending champ just about managed to scramble out of trouble to keep his title defence alive.
The French Open third seed won in Switzerland just two days prior to taking to the Roland Garros clay and there was a hint of fatigue about how he played. However, his struggles have only succeeded in keeping him under the radar in discussions about potential winners of the tournament. Wawrinka is far too often dismissed as an also-ran, but his ability on clay should see him considered a very real danger to the other main hopefuls in Paris, particularly considering a favourable draw.

3- Stepanek takes his time

As the light began to fade in Paris and Stepanek's legs started to tire, the oldest player in the French Open field resorted to increasingly obvious time-wasting tactics to force as much of his match with Murray to go into a second day as possible.
Murray was on a roll from the moment he stepped back on to court at the start of the third set and there was a real danger that Stepanek was going to be steamrollered at breakneck speed, but he made sure to use every trick in the book to earn himself a night's rest and a chance to go again on Tuesday.

4- Watson revels in Rio dream

The Olympics beckon for Heather Watson after her first round win over Nicole Gibbs. Watson needed to make sure of a place in the top 56 of the world rankings to tie down a place at the Rio Olympics, while defeat could have pushed her outside of that bracket.
Victory means that the Brit is almost certain of another crack at an Olympic medal.
“It’s been pretty much my main goal this year," Watson said. "I love it. I had a great time [at the 2012 London Olympics], and I want to go back.”

SHARING IS CARING – TODAY’S VIRAL GEMS

John McEnroe said before Stepanek vs. Murray that this year is the Scot's best ever chance of winning the French Open. Two sets later and that chance was very much hanging in the balance.
Stepanek went on to win the second set to go 2-0 up against Andy Murray, but he made a right horlicks of this open-court smash along the way:
