Ivanovic goes down against Svitolina
18-Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) beat 14-Ana Ivanovic (Serbia) 6-4 6-4 - Serbia's Ana Ivanovic was knocked out of the French Open by Elina Svitolina. Former champion Ivanovic, the 14th seed, always faced a battle against the 18th seeded Ukrainian and ended up losing 6-4 6-4.
Svitolina was in control almost throughout, her power too much for an opponent whose tennis was simply too wayward. After slopping 4-1 down in the second set Ivanovic rallied briefly to get it back to 4-4, but Svitolina dug in once more to secure a spot in the last-16.
Next up for Svitolina in the last-16 will be either Serena Williams or Kristina Mladenovic.
Ferrer breezes past Lopez
David Ferrer (11) beat Feliciano Lopez (21) 6-4 7-6 6-1. Ferrer made light work of his compatriot as he came through in straight sets. He will now face either Tomas Berdych or Pablo Cuevas for a place in the quarter-final.
Venus Williams survives scare against Alize Cornet
9-Venus Williams beat Alize Cornet 7-6 1-6 6-0. The elder sister of No 1 seed Serena overcame a blip in the second set to emerge victorious against the Frenchwoman after bageling her in the final stanza. She will now face Timea Bacsinszky for a place in the quarter-finals.
Goffin See off Almagro in five sets
12-David Goffin (Belgium) beat Nicolas Almagro (Spain) 6-2 4-6 6-3 4-6 6-2. The Belgian No 1 was pushed to the limit on the way to a fourth-round clash with Ernests Gulbis, who advanced after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retired with injury.
Bacsinszky batters Parmentier
8-Timea Bacsinszky (Switzerland) beat Pauline Parmentier (France) 6-4 6-2 - Swizterland's eighth seed Timea Bacsinszky crushed the hopes of local favourite Pauline Parmentier. Parmentier, 30, threw everything into a hard-fought opening set, breaking her opponent twice thanks to some fine returning, but losing her own serve three times. Bacisinszky upped her game on serve in the second set and never looked threatend again. She will play Venus Williams or Alize Cornet in the last 16.
Zverev goes down against Thiem
Dominic Thiem (Austria) beat Alexander Zverev (Germany) 6-7 6-3 6-3 6-3 - Dominic Thiem came out on top against Sasha Zverev in the battle of two of tennis's brightest and youngest stars. Zverev took the opener in a tie-break and a close match looked certain, but Thiem began to read his opponent increasingly effectively as the match went on and took the next three sets in a row.
