Serena Williams fought back from a set down to beat Yulia Putintseva 5-7 6-4 6-1 to progress to the last four at Roland Garros.
Putintseva secured a second break of the Williams serve at 5-5 during the first set and then held to love to open a one-set advantage, having made only two unforced errors the whole set.
The world number 60, who overcame Carla Suarez Navarro in the fourth round, secured an immediate break in the opening game of the next set to put herself in a commanding position.
However, Williams, a three-time winner at Roland Garros, rattled off the next four games to swing the momentum back in her favour.
Yet, Putintseva stemmed the tide and levelled the second stanza at 4-4 but Serena’s guile and experience saw her take the match to a decider.
The world number one claimed the final set 6-1 to move into the semi-final, where she will meet either Kiki Bertens who beat Timea Bacsinszky 7-6 5-2.
"I didn't think I was gonna win that in the second set," the 21-times grand slam champion said after booking her place in the semi-finals.
