British number one Konta, who clinched her maiden WTA Tour title with victory over Venus Williams at the Bank of West Classic in Stanford on Sunday, followed up Tuesday's first-round win against Shelby Rogers and will now play another American, Varvara Lepchenko.
Lepchenko, born in Uzbekistan, beat Britain's Naomi Broady in three sets in the second round.
Konta let slip a 4-2 lead in the opening set and squandered set point at 5-3 up before being pegged back by King at 5-5.
The 25-year-old, up to 14 in the world rankings after last weekend's success, then crucially held serve to lead 6-5 and despite venting her frustration at a series of wild forehands, converted her third break point in the 12th game to take the opening set 7-5 in just under an hour.
King appeared to lose heart under the consistency of Konta's deep groundstrokes at the start of the second set and was quickly broken twice to trail 3-1.
Konta, in the form of her life heading into the Rio Olympics, held serve to forge into a 4-1 lead and broke the American for a third time before serving out the set 6-1 for a convincing win that takes her into the last 16.
