It was the simplest of victories for eleventh seed Konta as she won 6-3 6-3, breaking twice in each set and hitting eight aces to repeat her Australian Open quarter-final victory over world number 38 Zhang.
The 25-year-old will now face Navarro in the third round, with a likely quarter-final tie with US Open champion and world number one Angelique Kerber at stake.
A win for Konta over Suarez Navarro would also see her close the gap on the Spaniard in the race to qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore, with the seventh seed occupying the eighth and final position.
And the opportunity to play Suarez Navarro in China is one the British number one is relishing.
"I don't think we've actually ever played against each other on the tour yet. That's always fun. Something different, something new," she said.
"We've practised together a few times. She's an incredibly talented player, a very good player. I'm really looking forward to being on court with her."
