A dominant Djokovic, 29, eased to victory in one hour and 32 minutes and will now face Dominic Thiem, who he has never lost to, for a place in the final.
Germany's Alexander Zverev and American John Isner were playing for the other final place.
The world number two reeled off six games on the bounce after Del Potro opened the match with a break of the Serb’s serve.
The second stanza was a more competitive affair but Djokovic secured the all-important break in the fifth game to seal his progression.
Djokovic now won 13 of the 17 meetings between the pair.
