The third seed, playing on the newly-named Pista Rafa Nadal, took just 75 minutes to overcome the Brazilian 6-1 6-2 and hit 23 winners along the way.
Nadal will face South African Kevin Anderson in the third round and was clearly touched that the court had been named in his honour.
"I want to thank the club for this honour," Nadal said on court.
"It's one of the most important tournaments for me, one of the courts where I had the best moments of my career. This place has meant a lot to me since forever, and (that) the club has decided to name the centre court with my name makes it even more special."
David Goffin continued his great start on clay with a 7-5 6-0 victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili and he will play Karen Khachanov, who edged out Pablo Cuevas 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/5).
Spaniard Feliciano Lopez took just 61 minutes to beat compatriot Albert Montanes 6-2 6-2 and he will now face top seed Andy Murray, who moved into the third round after Bernard Tomic withdrew from their match due to a back injury.
In Budapest, Ivo Karlovic is through to the quarter-finals of the Gazprom Hungarian Open after a 6-1 3-6 6-4 win over Damir Dzumhur.
Next up for the 38-year-old is British qualifier Aljaz Bedene, who did not drop serve in defeating Robin Haase 6-4 6-4.
Local hopes of a home quarter-finalist are over after wild card Marton Fucsovics lost 7-6 (8/6) 6-3 to fourth seed Fernando Verdasco and the Spaniard will face qualifier Laslo Djere after he completed a remarkable 7-5 6-2 comeback over Viktor Troicki, who lost the first set having led 5-0.
