Naomi Broady beat fellow Brit Laura Robson 6-7(4) 6-3 6-4 in the first round of the US Open.
After years of problems fighting injury and loss of form, Robson sparked hopes that she might be on the way back to her best as she won eighth consecutive matches to qualify for the first round of the tournament.
That optimism looked justified as Robson claimed the opening set in a tie-break.
But Broady broke at the start of the next set, and though Robson broke back Broady then grabbed the momentum again before serving out the set in blistering fashion.
And it was Broady who kept her form and consistency at a higher level in the decider, earning a place in the second round of a Grand Slam for only the second time in her career.
She has little chance of going any further, however: next up for the 6'2" right-hander from Stockport is likely to be world number four Agnieska Radwanska, who takes on world number 138 Jessica Pegula later on Tuesday evening.
