Novak Djokovic has taken a one-set lead against Stanislas Wawrinka in their US Open final, taking the first stanza 7-6 (1).
Djokovic, who became the third man to hold all four grand slam singles titles at once after his triumph at Roland Garros in June, came into the final with a 19-4 career head-to-head advantage over the Swiss third seed.
And the defending champion secured an early break before holding to love to open a 3-0 advantage.
The Swiss star rallied to get on the scoreboard, but struggled to put any pressure on the Djokovic serve right up until the Serb attempted to serve it out at 5-3.
Then, however, the momentum, shifted: Wawrinka pounced to earn his first break opportunity, and a double-fault from the world number one put the first set back on serve.
Djokovic regained his focus, taking the tie-break with ease - but a match which seemed it might be a walkover after the opening 20 minutes now looks like developing into an epic.
