Anastasija Sevastova produced the biggest win of her career to upset French Open champion Garbine Muguruza and advance to the third round of the US Open.
Muguruza seemed to be in control, serving for the opening set at 5-4 but then an alarming drop in form saw her win just one more game as the Latvian served for the match at 5-1 in the second set.
Sevatsova seemed to tighten up, sensing the enormity of the occasion and let two match points slip on her own serve as Muguruza broke back twice to drag the match back on serve.
But the Spaniard’s unforced errors returned to haunt her and the Latvian held her nerve to break again and book a place in the third round where she will now face Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine.
With the match slipping away and the crowd at the massive Arthur Ashe Stadium court buzzing, Sevastova steeled her nerves collecting one more service break with a forehand crosscourt winner for the biggest win of her career.
"I was shaking a little bit at the end," admitted 26-year-old Sevastova. "A night match on Ashe. What is going to be bigger?"
