Angelique Kerber stormed into the US Open semi-finals with a 7-5 6-0 victory over Roberta Vinci.
The German, seeking to dislodge Serena Williams as world No.1, edged a thrilling first set before racing through the second to reach the last four.
Vinci’s hopes of causing an upset disintegrated when she foot-faulted at set point in the opener – the Italian sarcastically applauding the line judge as she walked away – with her composure absent thereon.
Kerber will face the winner of Caroline Wozniacki’s clash with Anastasija Sevastova.
The 28-year-old will definitely take the No.1 ranking with victory at Flushing Meadows, while she can also clinch it if Williams fails to reach the final.
