Roger Federer: 'Winning two slams this year is plenty, to win a third would be a joke'

Roger Federer admits it would "be a joke" if he wins a third Grand Slam of the season at the US Open.

The 19-times Grand Slam champion will bid to win his 20th major at Flushing Meadowns next month to go with his victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
At the age of 36, the Swiss starts out as favourite to conquer New York with the year ending world number one ranking also up for grabs.
"That would be a joke, if I won three slams this year out of nowhere," said Federer.
"I know if I stay in shape there are chances for me to do well at the US Open, but to win it? Yeah, at some stage I almost feel like I have to be realistic.
I am not 25 anymore. I'm not sure I can win three slams in one year. Winning two is already pretty crazy and plenty good enough for me.

After beating Rafael Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 for his 18th major at the Australian Open in January, Federer did not drop a set in winning Wimbledon for an eighth time as he ripped through Marin Cilic's defences 6-3 6-1 6-4 in the last month's final.
"I was hoping that things were going to play out nicely and that I was going to be in contention in the second week at Wimbledon," he said.
To win it altogether? It's like the dream scenario that you hope happens but you're so cautious that you never really want to go there mentally.
Federer has already completed the Australian, Wimbledon and US Open treble three times in his career in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Astonishingly, he has fought back from a knee injury that saw him hobble out of the sport for the second half of 2016 following his defeat to Milos Raonic at the Wimbledon semi-finals a year ago.
Rather than signal his decline, he is back up to world number three.
He missed this week's Cincinatti Masters to rest his back, but should be ready for a serious assult on the season's final major that begins on August 28.
"I'll definitely try and get myself organized, prepared and ready so that I'll have the best chance to do well at the US Open," he said.
