South African player Kevin Anderson has revealed he received death threats after losing to Denis Istomin in the first round of Wimbledon.
The world number 25 - who lost a five-set epic to Novak Djokovic in the last 16 of last year's tournament - was threatened on and Facebook and Twitter from punters who had put a bet on his match.
He lost 4-6, 6-7 (13-15), 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 to Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.
"Bummed to have lost yesterday, but at least I had a ton of death threats on facebook and twitter to make me feel better about things," he tweeted.
“Thanks to GOOD people out there who stick with me through this tough year.
"It pretty much happens after every match regardless of the circumstances," said Anderson.
"People who have bet on the match tend to take to social media and say very inappropriate things."
