Defending champion Djokovic cruised to through the first two sets in just over an hour as it looked like the Serb would make short work of his 55th-ranked opponent.
However, the Frenchman put up as much of a battle as he could muster, holding to love then breaking Djokovic in the third set, forcing a tie-breaker, but in the end he could not hold off the sheer power of the world number one.
Bad weather in SW19 meant most of the matches on the outside courts were postponed, so Djokovic will be relieved to get his match over and done with rather than stringing it out over hours or even days.
World number one Djokovic holds all four grand slam titles and has another historic mark in his sights.
The 29-year-old is aiming to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to achieve the calendar Grand Slam - winning the four majors in a single season.
