World number 111 Naomi Broady stunned Alizé Cornet 7-6 (3) 6-0 to progress to the second round at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.
Broady, 27, took the first set on a tie-break after 56 minutes before bageling her opponent in the second.
“I was really trying to mix the ball up a lot today, use my slice and then hit the next ball as hard as I could, just to keep mixing up the pace and not give her a rhythm,” said Broady
“Alize is great mover, she’s a very consistent player, so I knew if I played with a lot of rhythm then I would be playing into the way she wants to play. I tried to stay as far away from her game style as I could.”
British number two Broady will now face either Tereza Smitkova or Petra Kvitova in the next round.
Second seed Elina Svitolina weathered a Heather Watson fightback to progress to the second round.

However, Svitolina, currently ranked fifth in the world, claimed a decisive break in the fourth game of the deciding set before sealing her progress to the second round with a timely hold of serve. .
