Lake Placid prepares Bid for 2023 WU

LAUSANNE – The bidding project of Lake Placid for the organisation of the 2023 Winter Universiade is taking shape. A delegation from the city of Lake Placid met with the FISU Secretary General/CEO Eric Saintrond, Winter Universiade Director Milan Augustin and WU Executive Assistant Jiho Kim at the FISU headquarters on 20 - 21 March, 2017.

The delegation consisted of 6 people: Craig Randall (Mayor Lake Placid Village), Jay Rand (Councilman, Sports Venue Management and Former Winter Universiade Ski Jumper), Dr. Kelly Chezum (Vice-President for External Relations at Clarkson University), James McKenna (President/CEO - Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism in Lake Placid), JoAnn McKenna and Doug Stewart (Legal Advisor). The Lake Placid delegation that arrived to Lausanne for the two days meeting have already participated in the observer programme during the Almaty 2017 Winter Universiade.

The first part of the meeting was dedicated to the presentation of the project of 2023 Winter Universiade in Lake Placid. Most of the sports facilities already exist. The City of Lake Placid has a long sports tradition for more than 80 years with the organisation of the Winter Olympic Games in 1932 and 1980 and, of course, the Winter Universiade in 1972.

The Lake Placid project has the full support of the USA University Sports Federation and the next meeting is planned to be held during the annual USISUF board meeting that will take place in Indianapolis end of April. The meeting will be attended by FISU President Oleg Matytsin and FISU Secretary General/CEO Eric Saintrond.
