Steijn Schothorst (Equipe Verschuur) set best time during the collective tests at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on Friday. For the first day of the Renault Sport R.S. 01, as part of the World Series by Renault, the Dutchman clocked the quickest time of 2:13.449, leading from Fumanelli (Oregon Team) and Luciano Bacheta (Oregon Team). In the ‘Prestige’ class, Capitanio (Oregon Team) was quickest, ahead of Richard Gonda (ART Junior Team) and Philippe Haezebrouck (Zele Racing). In the morning session it was Roy Geerts (V8 Racing) and Gonda leading their respective categories.
However, Oregon Team won their first-ever race in the Renault Sport Trophy thanks to sublime driving from Fumanelli and Capitano. The duo drove to victory in the Endurance race ahead of team-mates Bacheta and Niccolò Nalio (Oregon Team #6), taking the lead in the championship standings. Andrea Pizzitola and Richard Gonda (ART Junior Team #2) completed the podium, but the Slovak, first at the mid-way point in the race, can take solace in becoming the first leader of the Prestige classification.
The Dutch drivers and teams monopolised the top spots in the first Renault Sport Trophy sprint races on Sunday. Diederik Sijthoff (V8 Racing) won the Prestige race ahead of Toni Forné (ART Junior Team) and Sarah Bovy (Monlau Competicion). Racing on home soil, the Belgian native is the first female driver to finish on the podium in the World Series by Renault. A few hours later, Schothorst (Equipe Verschuur) triumphed in the Elite race in front of Andrea Pizzitola (ART Junior Team) and Belgium’s Wolfgang Reip (Monlau Competicion). At the end of the first meeting, Schothorst and Sijthoff lead their respective categories.
