It was just like qualifying, says WTCC winner Bennani
Mehdi Bennani believes his all-out charge was key to his victory in the Main Race at FIA WTCC DHL Race of Qatar last week.
Bennani converted his maiden pole into his maiden Main Race victory following a stylish drive for Sébastien Loeb Racing.
“I push to the maximum because I knew it would be very tough because it’s the Main Race and we have all very quick drivers,” said the Moroccan. “I know [José María] López is just behind, [Yvan] Muller, Thed, so it’s going to be very tough. And when I see at the start that José is already ahead of the Volvo I knew a big fight would start. After I tried to do 12 or 13 laps like qualifying and the only thing in my mind was I would win or I would put my car in the wall because I absolutely wanted to win this race.”
As well as winning the WTCC Trophy title for independent racers, Bennani placed fifth in the final overall standings courtesy of his win double in 2016.
