Why the weight didn’t get Bennani down in the WTCC
Mehdi Bennani reckoned he over-achieved at WTCC Race of Argentina by scoring his third podium of 2017 to remain firmly in the hunt for the FIA World Touring Car Championship.
Bennani’s Citroën C-Elysée WTCC was saddled with the maximum 80 kilgrams of compensation weight at Circuito Termas de Río Hondo, prompting the Sébastien Loeb Racing driver to fear a poor return from the two races in South America.
But Bennani made light of the extra weight to finish second in the Opening Race and fifth in the Main Race, which puts him fourth in the standings heading into the summer break.
“To have results like this when we carry maximum ballast with 80 kilos is really good,” said the Moroccan. “From the beginning of the weekend we knew we would have a tough weekend but in the end it’s good because we score good points and very good fights.”
