Yet for some reason they have won the hearts of some of the most famous, powerful and glamorous people on the planet.

As yet another superstar heartthrob joins the ranks of Hammers fans, we take a look at the club's incredible list of supporters.

The latest star to be unveiled as a West Ham fan is the 23-year-old singer. It's perhaps not surprsising considering that she split her childhood between the leafy South East London suburb of Bromley and the Essex town of Brentwood. To prove her allegiance she recently donned a West Ham kit on a BT Sport football talk show.

Her Royal Highness spent years declining to tell the world which football team she supported, but apparently she let slip the secret when she overheard some of her flunkies at Windsor Castle discussing an upcoming match between the Hammers and Millwall in 2009. "She gave up her secret after overhearing one of her staff members saying he was a Millwall fan and was talking to another member of staff about the derby," a palace source said at the time. "They were quite shocked - after all, she's not exactly your typical West Ham fan."

The US president first developed a soft spot for the Hammers in 2003, when he made a trip to England while still toiling away in the Illinois state Senate. Apparently he "watches Premier League matches whenever his busy schedule allows" - which, considering that he still squeezes in a game of golf once a week during the summer, is probably a fair amount.

The waif-like actress grew up on the far side of London from West Ham (in Teddington, fact fans) but has supported West Ham for years. She even claims that she only bought a TV so that she could watch football, and recently told the world that she thinks Gary Neville is a "f***** amazing" pundit.

The loudmouth comedian and serial philanderer is one of West Ham's most prominent famous fans, and is regularly seen at the Boleyn Ground. He also introduced the club to his former spouse… who is next up on our list.

The American singer was, for a while, West Ham's most-photographed fan after presenting MTV's European Music Awards while wearing lingerie in Hammers' colours. She is reportedly still a fan of the club despite her split from Russell Brand.

The hard-man actor is a lifelong fan of the Hammers, but has had to stop going to home matches because he kept on getting bugged by his fellow fans. "I used to love being in the crowd and just sitting there with the boys having a laugh," he said. "Then I found I couldn't because people will talk to me all through the game - I'm not moaning about it, they were just talking - but I want to watch the game with my mates."

The comedian, actor, writer and presenter is famously mad keen on football, and West Ham is his club. He even had his stag do at Upton Park a couple of years ago, where he celebrated his upcoming nuptials with a kickabout on the hallowed turf alongside fellow B-listers such as John Bishop, Jamie Redknapp and fame-hungry Dragons Den star Peter Jones.

The former heavyweight boxing champ, uniquely on this list, was actually born in West Ham and supported them all his life. He even turned up and gave the players a team talk before the match against Norwich in January. The team talk doesn't sound like it was much cop - "I told them that they had to go and win because I’m here!" he later said - but it must have worked: West Ham won 2-0.

The Monty Python and Fawlty Towers star is apparently a West Ham "fanatic", and the immortal line from his 1986 film Clockwise might have been written specifically for any supporter of a yo-yo club: "It’s not the despair. I can cope with the despair. It’s the hope that kills you."

The Jason Bourne actor told the world back in 2007 that he was a Hammers fan, a habit that he picked up when based in the UK filming Saving Private Ryan. Determined not to support Manchester United (because " everyone on the crew assured me that was just like rooting for the New York Yankees, who I hate because I’m a huge Boston Red Sox fan") he tried getting behind Leeds for a while ("but it didn’t work - they were terrible") before settling on West Ham.
