Alpine Skiing news - Marcel Hirscher bounces back with storming second run for 30th slalom victory

World number one Marcel Hirscher bounced back from a disappointing first run to take victory in the slalom at Zagreb on Sunday.

Trailing compatriot Marco Schwarz by 0.37s from the first run knew he had to put in a much better performance at the second attempt to put the pressure on the 23-year-old.

As well as that he had just seen another Austrian, Manuel Feller, and France’s Alexis Pinturault put in excellent second runs of their own.

Hirscher responded as you would expect, with a blistering run of 56.47s that put him into the lead.

And the pressure clearly got to Schwarz who continued his unenviable record of never having won a slalom having led from the first run when he straddled a gate.

The victory gives Hirscher his 30th slalom World Cup win and further cements his lead at the top of both the slalom and overall standings.

Hirscher is now five wins away from Alberto Tomba’s tally of 35 slalom victories and ten off the great Ingemar Stenmark’s haul of 40.

“That was definitely not the easiest victory I’ve had so far but at the end of the day I am super, super happy.” Hirscher said afterwards.

“It was quite a hard day, it started with a little scratch but it is not too much.”

When asked about his struggle for form and whether he was back on track Hirscher replied: “Not really!

“The feeling is still a little bit weird because with the change in conditions we have this year it is a little bit different to other years. It is hard to find the right set-up with each terrain and for every condition.

“It is great to ski in front of this amazing crowd, to be and to live in the city is an amazing thing and here we always have perfect conditions.”

Great Britain's Dave Ryding also battled back from a disappointing run to finish 11th.
