Age no barrier for Vonn as she claims record-breaking Cortina downhill win

With less than three weeks to go until the world's best winter athletes descend on PyeongChang, Vonn, 33, provided a timely reminder of why she firmly remains one to watch.

Injuries have continually peppered the American's glittering career – she missed Sochi 2014 with a knee injury while decisions to compete are taken on a race to race basis – but Vonn proved she is still a force to be reckoned with.

She won on Saturday by 0.92 seconds from Liechtenstein's Tina Weirather to notch her 79th career victory.

The success also saw her break Elisabeth Goergl's record as the oldest woman to win a World Cup downhill, although the Austrian still holds the mark for the oldest winner of any World Cup race after triumphing in the Super-G in 2014 at 33 days, 301 days.

Vonn also added another entry into the record books as the first alpine skier, male or female, to win a World Cup race in 15 consecutive calendar years.

It continued a strong weekend for the American who was second in Friday's first downhill behind Italian Sofia Goggia – the latter failed to finish on Saturday.

The podium was instead completed by Vonn's compatriot Jackie Wiles who became the fifth US female alpine skier to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Another American who will be heading to South Korea with medals firmly on the agenda will be Mikaela Shiffrin although the runaway World Cup leader could only manage seventh in her least comfortable discipline on Saturday.
