Lindsey Vonn wins in Are but misses out on history as Goggia takes downhill title

Vonn was chasing a ninth downhill Crystal Globe which would have seen her break the shared record with retired Swede Ingemar Stenmark for the most season titles in one discipline.

But exactly three weeks after having to settle for Olympic downhill bronze behind Italian Goggia, Vonn was once again denied by her rival.

She could not have done more herself, posting the fastest time of 55.65 down the Are course but with Goggia already second fastest, Vonn knew that the Italian, six hundredths of a second slower, was still in position for the title due to combined results from all eight World Cup downhills this season. Vonn's teammate Alice McKennis completed the podium.

The 33-year-old did still claim her 82nd World Cup title, moving four wins shy of Stenmark's record of 86 career World Cup wins.

For Goggia, who finished on 509 points to Vonn's 506, it continued a golden season as she backed up her Olympic title with a first World Cup Crystal Globe.

She becomes the fourth Italian woman to win an alpine skiing title after Deborah Compagnoni (1997 giant slalom), Isolde Kostner (2001 and 2002 downhill) and Denise Karbon (2008 giant slalom).
