In all five of the slalom races this season Vlhova had finished second behind the reigning World Cup champion.
And it looked as if that streak would continue when Shiffrin led the way after an opening run of 56.14 that put her in the lead.
Vlhova finished third, 0.31s back but she put in a blistering run to clock a time of 56.40s which put her at 1:52.85.
Anna Swenn Larsson was unable to match Vlhova which left it all down to Shiffrin.
However the American wobbled occasionally, losing critical time, and in the end she finished 0.15s behind Vlhova.
Victory for Vlhova sees her close the gap on Shiffrin in the standing and take home the biggest purse of the women’s season, 78,000 Swiss Francs.
The women’s tour will continue this weekend at St Anton with the Downhill and Super-G where former World Cup champion will make her comeback from injury.
