Olsson claims Parallel Giant Slalom success in Italy

The 29-year-old beat world number one Marcel Hirscher in the semi-finals and followed that up by winning the all-Scandinavian battle with Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway in the final by just three hundredths of a second.

Starting quickly, he led throughout and had just enough to hold off the fast-finishing Kristoffersen to take his maiden success.

Olsson becomes the 13th Swede to win a men's World Cup alpine skiing event, with only Mattias Hargin older when he won his first.

Meanwhile Hirscher edged out another Norwegian, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, in the battle for third.

As a result he takes the overall World Cup lead from Aksel Lund Svindal who was not in action.
