Winter sports news - Mikaela Shiffrin set for World Cup victory despite absence
Updated 02/03/2019 at 10:23 GMT
Mikaela Shiffrin is set to claim her third consecutive overall World Cup title on Saturday, despite skipping this weekend's Sochi leg of the event.
In fact Saturday's scheduled downhill race was cancelled due to heavy snowfall, with Sunday's planned super-G now scheduled for Saturday.
However, results this weekend will make no difference to the overall outcome, with American Shiffrin having completely dominated the tournament, now 719 points ahead of second place Petra Vlhova, and only 600 points still at stake in the competition.
Switzerland's Wendy Holdener trails Vlhova, who has also decided not to compete at Sochi, by 146 points.
Shiffrin has won 14 gold medals during this season's campaign to level with the record set by Switzerland's Vreni Schneider in 1988/99.
Speaking last month, Shiffrin was praised by fellow American and the most successful female ski racer of all time, the recently retired Lindsey Vonn.
Vonn said: "She's [Shiffrin] incredibly talented and is in a league of her own right now."
