Alpine Skiing - Switzerland break record with dramatic alpine team event triumph

Having edged past Sweden on a tiebreak after a 2-2 draw in the quarter-finals and then beating Germany 3-1 in the semi-finals, the Swiss quartet of Aline Danioth, Wendy Holdener, Daniel Yule and Ramon Zenhaeusern prepared to take on the flying Norwegians in the showpiece of the parallel giant slalom event in Soldeu.

They fell 2-0 behind as Thea Louise Stjernesund beat Danioth and Leif Kristian Nestvold-Haugen was quicker than Zenhaeusern in their head-to-heads – but Holdener then outskied Mina Fuerst Holtmann to take it down to the final heat.

That meant Yule needed to not only beat Sebastian Foss-Solevaag but complete the course in a time faster than 21.28s to take gold.

Foss-Solevaag lost one of his poles early in the run but Yule stayed calm to beat his Norwegian rival and clock a time of 20.91s to snatch victory for his nation for a record fourth time – ending the tie with Austria on three wins.

In the small final, Germany beat Canada to take bronze as Anton Tremmel beat Trevor Philp in the decisive heat.
