Winter sports news - Marc Gisin 'stable' after horror crash, says sister

Marc Gisin's condition is said to be stable following a horrific crash in the downhill competition at the world cup in Val Gardena on Saturday.

Michelle Gisin, an Olympic champion herself, was quoted by Swiss news outlet Blick as having said: "Marc is awake and his condition is stable."

However, she said he had previously been unconscious for sometime.

She said: "They are now on their way to Bolzano to the hospital. Let's hope for the best. At the moment we do not know any more."

Reports following the crash suggested no head injuries were sustained, though Gisin suffered a pelvic fracture.

Gisin was previously injured in 2015 in the Super-G at Kitzbuhel, which forced him to end his season early.

Other competitors wished Gisin the best on Saturday, with eventual winner Aleksander Aamodt Kilde admitting: "It's always a risk."

Beat Feuz, who came in third place on Saturday, said the incident had taken the shine off his podium spot.

He was quoted in the same article as having said: "My ride was okay. But you can not be so happy about it."
