Farah storms to record-equalling fourth Great North Run title

Farah finished six seconds ahead of nearest rival Jake Robertson, powering past the New Zealand runner in the closing stages to clock 1:00.06 in the elite men's race.

The 34-year-old's victory adds to the races he won in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and ties him with Kenyan Benson Masya, who won in 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1996, for number of victories in the event.

Mary Keitany, who surged home to win the London Marathon earlier this year, took her third Great North Run crown in the women’s race, finishing in 1:05.09.

For four-time Olympic gold medallist Farah, the victory was far from a breeze, making an already memorable 2017 even more special with another incredible victory.

After retiring from track racing with a gold in the 10,000m and silver in the 5,000m at the World Atheletics Championships in London, Farah has vowed to rest up in order to come back fit and firing once again.

"That was really, really tough," said Farah. "I think it was a lack of training really. I'm sore everywhere - I've never been this sore!

"With four miles to go I was hanging on - but I managed to believe in myself and know that at the end I can sprint.

"The kick worked for me and I'm really enjoying myself and living the dream. I'm so pleased with how the season has gone.

"Now I'll go on a little holiday with the missus and then come back fresh. I'm looking forward to sticky toffee pudding and apple pie!" Sportsbeat 2017
