Oscar Pistorius jail term increased from six to 13 years

The 31-year-old was serving a six-year jail term for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on 14 February, 2013.

But on Friday the court ruled Pistorius’ sentence was too lenient, increasing it to 15 years.

The new 15-year sentence is the minimum recommended term for murder in South Africa, but the time the former Paralympian sprinter has already served is taken into account, so the time remaining in prison is now 13 years and 5 months.

Pistorius was originally jailed in July 2016 after being found guilty on appeal for the murder of Steenkamp.

The athlete claimed a shot his girlfriend by mistake through a bathroom door, thinking she was an intruder.

An initial 2014 ruling of culpable homicide was previously increased on appeal.

Pistorius, who won six Paralympic gold medals and became the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics at London 2012, was not in court to hear the decision.
