The Oakland Athletics have agreed to a minor league deal with veteran left-hander Brett Anderson, according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle.

The deal would bring Anderson back to the team he began his once-promising
major league career with. Nothing has been finalized, but Anderson has changed
his Twitter profile to read "I throw baseballs for the A's again."
Oakland signed Anderson's former teammate and another once-promising A's
pitcher, Trevor Cahill, to a one-year, $1.5 million contract on Monday.
The 30-year-old Anderson made 13 starts last season, posting a 6.34 ERA and
spending time on the disabled list with a back injury. Numerous ailments have
ravaged Anderson's career -- he underwent Tommy John surgery while with the
A's in 2011 and had surgery to repair a bulging disc in his back while with
the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016. Other injuries include his ankle, oblique,
wrist, foot and finger at various times across his nine years in the majors.
Coming up with the Athletics, though, Anderson was one of baseball's top
prospects. He posted a 3.81 ERA in 84 games (73 starts) across five seasons in
Oakland and last had extended success in the majors when he posted a 3.69 ERA
in 31 starts for the Dodgers in 2015.
Anderson and Cahill each add depth for an Oakland pitching staff that will see
Jharel Cotton lost for the season after he undergoes Tommy John surgery on
Wednesday.
