Allyson Felix won a sixth Olympic gold medal – two clear of any woman in athletics history – as the United States tore to victory in the women’s 4x400m relay, with Great Britain recovering brilliantly to take bronze.
Felix carried the American quartet to a sixth straight title in 3:19.06, with Jamaica clocking 3:20.34 for silver.
The 30-year-old boasts five Olympic relay titles across the 4x100m and 4x400m, with her sole individual title coming in the 200m at London 2012.
GB’s medal hopes were in tatters when second-leg runner Anyika Onuora suddenly slumped down the order in the home straight, but Emily Diamond hauled them back into contention with a super lap.
A queue of athletes swarmed over Christine Ohuruogu as the battle for bronze went to the wire, but the 2008 Olympic champion refused to crack and secured GB a podium spot in 3:25.88.
