Manaea (3-2) tossed the 12th no-hitter in franchise history, finishing the
milestone with 108 pitches and facing three above the minimum. He was mobbed
by his teammates after completing the seventh no-hitter in the Oakland era as
"Celebration" by Kool and the Gang blared.
"Oh man, my heart was beating out of my chest, and I was trying to do
everything I could [to stay calm]," Manaea told Braden in a postgame
interview. The effort also marked Manaea's first career complete game.
The Red Sox were no-hit for the 12th time in team history and first time since
April 22, 1993. The Red Sox dropped to 17-3 and saw an eight-game winning
streak stopped.
Indians 4, Orioles 0
Mike Clevinger (2-0) pitched his first career shutout and Jose Ramirez went
3-for-4 with a homer as Cleveland cruised over host Baltimore at Camden Yards.
Clevinger (2-0) was terrific while allowing just two hits in his first career
complete game. The right-hander struck out three and walked two in throwing
107 pitches. Yonder Alonso and Yan Gomes also went deep for Cleveland, which
won for just the second time in five games.
Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman (0-4) served up the three homers and gave
up four runs and eight hits in six innings. Tillman struck out five and walked
one as Baltimore lost for the seventh time in eight games.
Phillies 6, Pirates 2
Rhys Hoskins drove in four runs, including three on a go-ahead home run in the
sixth inning, as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in
Philadelphia.
Hoskins added a run-scoring single in a three-run eighth inning as the
Phillies beat the Pirates for the third time in three days. Sean Rodriguez
homered for Pittsburgh, which lost for the fifth time in its last six games.
Aaron Nola (2-1) got the win for the Phillies, allowing two runs and six hits
in seven innings. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Michael Feliz
(0-1) took the loss in relief, coming in with two runners on base and allowing
Hoskins' home run. Closer Hector Neris, who got the final out of the eighth
inning, pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.
Cardinals 4, Reds 3
St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina hit his sixth homer of the season to break a
tie in the seventh inning and Paul DeJong and Dexter Fowler also homered as
the Cardinals beat the reeling Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium.
Molina homered off Jared Hughes (0-2) as the Cardinals regained the lead after
Cincinnati tied the game with three two-out runs in the top of the seventh.
The Cardinals (12-8) have won all six games against the Reds this season,
extending their head-to-head streak to 10 games.
Rookie Jordan Hicks (1-0) retired the final batter of the seventh inning and
went the rest of the way for his first major league victory. Hicks' fastball
has averaged 99 mph, the highest in the majors, according to Fangraphs.com.
Rays 10, Twins 1
C.J. Cron homered twice and drove in four runs and Blake Snell tossed seven
solid innings to help Tampa Rays record a blowout victory over visiting
Minnesota at Tropicana Field.
Denard Span went 2-for-5 with three RBIs for the Rays, who have won four of
their past five games. Daniel Robertson also homered and Joey Wendle went
3-for-4 as Tampa Bay was an impressive 7-for-9 with runners in scoring
position. Cron doubled his homer total for this season while notching his
ninth career multihomer game.
Snell (3-1) allowed one run and five hits while winning his third straight
decision. The left hander struck out six and didn't issue a walk. Twins
right-hander Kyle Gibson (1-1) was charged with four runs and five hits over 6
1/3 innings. Gibson struck out seven and walked one.
Brewers 6, Marlins 5
Jesus Aguilar ended a 13-pitch at-bat with a walk-off solo homer in the ninth
inning as Milwaukee rallied to defeat visiting Miami.
Aguilar, who had entered the game as a defensive substitution in the top of
the ninth, led off the frame and battled reliever Junichi Tazawa (0-1). It was
Aguilar's first homer of the season, an opposite-field shot to right-center.
He was the first batter Tazawa faced in the game.
Miami was led by rookie center fielder Lewis Brinson, who slugged a three-run
home run. Brinson, who entered this series batting just .131 with no homers
and one RBI, has three homers and six RBIs in this series, which culminates on
Sunday.
Tigers 12, Royals 4
Nicholas Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs apiece as the
Detroit Tigers rolled over the struggling Kansas City Royals.
Castellanos had three hits, including his first homer this season. Cabrera
supplied two hits, walked twice and also scored twice as the Tigers won for
the fifth time in six games.
Winning pitcher Mike Fiers (2-1) allowed four runs (two earned) on 10 hits in
5 1/3 innings. Royals ace Danny Duffy (0-3) gave up six runs on 10 hits in 4
2/3 innings for the Royals, who have lost 10 of their last 11 games.
Braves 4, Mets 3
Center fielder Ender Inciarte's drag bunt scored Johan Camargo in the ninth
inning and gave Atlanta a come-from-behind win over New York at SunTrust Park.
The Braves won it against New York closer Jeurys Familia (1-1), who allowed
his first runs of the season and failed in his effort to get a four-out save.
The winning pitcher was Jesse Biddle (1-0), who pitched a scoreless inning in
his major league debut.
For the first seven innings, the game was a pitching duel between New York's
Jacob deGrom and Atlanta's Julio Teheran. DeGrom allowed no runs on four hits
and two walks, striking out 10. Teheran allowed no runs on four hits and one
walk, whiffing six.
Yankees 9, Blue Jays 1
Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs and Miguel Andujar keyed a
seven-run sixth with a three-run double as the New York Yankees defeated the
visiting Toronto Blue Jays.
Jordan Montgomery (2-0) held the Blue Jays to one run on four hits and three
walks. The left-hander struck out five in six innings for the Yankees, who
have won two of the first three games of the series.
Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman (0-2) allowed eight runs (six earned), five
hits and four walks while striking out five in 5 1/3 innings.
Rockies 5, Cubs 2
Tyler Anderson pitched six strong innings and had a key at-bat in Colorado's
fifth inning, and the Rockies beat the visiting Chicago Cubs.
Anderson (1-0) got his first win in five starts this season after settling
down following a rough beginning. Wade Davis got the last three outs for his
ninth save. Nolan Arenado had two hits and Gerardo Parra drove in a pair of
runs for Colorado, which prevailed in the cold weather. It was 41 degrees at
first pitch and dropped to 35 degrees by game's end.
Albert Almora Jr. followed Friday's four-hit night with two more for Chicago,
and Willson Contreras had two RBIs.
Astros 10, White Sox 1
Josh Reddick belted two homers Saturday night, including his second grand slam
of April, as Houston routed grief-stricken Chicago at Guaranteed Rate Field in
Chicago.
Dallas Keuchel (1-3) cruised through six innings, allowing four hits and a run
with two walks and six strikeouts to pick up his first win in five starts. It
was the fifth straight win for Houston (15-7), which has outscored Seattle and
Chicago (4-13) by a whopping 40-5 in that span.
Lucas Giolito (0-3) lost his third straight start, beset by crippling control
problems. Giolito walked seven batters in two-plus innings, six of them
scoring, and gave up nine runs on five hits with a strikeout. It was the White
Sox's first game since reliever Danny Farquhar collapsed in the dugout during
Friday night's 10-0 loss from a cerebral hemorrhage caused by a ruptured
aneurysm.
Diamondbacks 6, Padres 2
Arizona center fielder A.J. Pollock had two hits including a homer and drove
in two and Paul Goldschmidt had two extra-base hits and drove in a run as the
Diamondbacks evened their weekend series with a victory over San Diego at
Chase Field.
Pollock's fifth homer of the season broke a tie at two in the third inning,
and Goldschmidt tripled in a run and scored in on Pollock's RBI-single in a
two-run seventh for the Diamondbacks (14-6), who have set a franchise record
by winning their first six series.
San Diego right fielder Franchy Cordero had a two-run double off the center
field fence in the first inning, but the Padres (8-14) could get only two
other runners as far as second base.
Angels 4, Giants 3
Garrett Richards struck out 11 over six innings, Mike Trout homered and Los
Angeles ended a four-game losing streak with a win over San Francisco at Angel
Stadium.
Richards improved to 3-0 after holding the Giants to two runs on five hits and
one walk. His 11 strikeouts were a season high.
Brandon Belt hit a two-run homer and Evan Longoria had two hits for San
Francisco. Albert Pujols homered for Los Angeles, his two-run homer in the
sixth off Giants starter Derek Holland providing the margin for victory.
Dodgers 4, Nationals 0
Hyun-Jin Ryu tossed seven scoreless innings while Joc Pederson, Kike Hernandez
and Cody Bellinger each walloped homers as Los Angeles blanked Washington at
Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
In winning his third straight start, Ryu (3-0) permitted just two hits,
walking three and fanning eight. Trea Turner and Matt Wieters each managed
harmless singles off Ryu, who threw 58 of his 89 pitches for strikes.
Stephen Strasburg (2-2) pitched well enough to win on most nights. In seven
innings, the right hander ceded only five hits and two runs, issuing two walks
and striking out 10.
Mariners 9, Rangers 7
Robinson Cano hit a go-ahead, two-run home run as part of a five-run,
eighth-inning uprising for Seattle, and Edwin Diaz got the final four outs for
his MLB-leading eighth save as the Mariners came from behind to beat Texas in
the middle game of a three-game series in Arlington, Tex.
The start of the contest was delayed 1 hour, 25 minutes by rain and neither
Seattle starter James Paxton nor Rangers starter Bartolo Colon figured in the
decision. Paxton gave up five runs on six hits in four innings of work while
Colon, coming off a game where he retired the first 21 batters he faced,
allowed four runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Cano, Dee Gordon and Nelson Cruz had three hits each for Seattle, which
pounded out 13 hits against five Rangers pitchers. The Rangers' offense was
not the issue, as Texas had 11 hits, led by two each by Shin-Soo Choo, Isiah
Kiner-Falefa, Nomar Mazara and Jurickson Profar.
