The announcement came as Garbelotto also resigned from his role as Great Britain men's head coach, citing personal reasons.
Basketball Scotland confirmed Garbelotto will have no further involvement with the men's national team programme, and said they are moving swiftly to ensure a replacement head coach is appointed in time for April's Games on the Gold Coast.
Kevin Pringle, chief executive of Basketball Scotland, said: "It is with regret that we have had to terminate Tony's contract with the men's national team.
"With the Commonwealth Games now fast approaching, our focus turns to the recruitment of a new Head Coach to give them as much time as possible with the squad before April's Games."
Garbelotto was only appointed as coach for Team Scotland and Great Britain last year, and his departure will send shockwaves across the basketball community.
British Basketball performance director Mark Clark said: "All at British Basketball wish Tony well for the future and thank him for the work he has undertaken with the GB Men.
"With the next FIBA World Cup Qualifying window fast approaching, the current Assistant Coach of the GB Men's National Team, Alberto Lorenzo, will act as Head Coach for the upcoming FIBA World Cup Qualification games in February".
Great Britain face Israel and Greece later this month in their second window of 2019 qualifiers, having suffered narrow losses to Greece and Estonia in the first window last November.
